BBC News at Six

Basic details-

1. BBC stands for British Broadcasting Corporation.
2. A conundrum in public service broadcasting is how to ensure that a publicly- funded broadcast can remain independent from political control. It ensures that it is British people who pay for the BBC, not the government.
3. BBC's famous mission statement is to inform, educate and entertain.
4. BBC has a remit to be the bbc's most popular channel and attract high viewing figures.
5. BBC news at 6 fits into the remit as it is shown at the start of prime time when a lot of people are watching TV.

Presenters-

1. The presenters are Sophie Raworth and George Alagiah.
2.The presenters of BBC News wear very smart casual clothes for example Sophie Raworth wears dresses to show that she is smart and George Alagiah wears a suit with a tie which shows that he is smart and to show to the audience that he's taking it serious/ mature.
3.The TV News programme might use many presenters to make sure the viewers do not listen to just one presenter throughout the whole of the 28 minutes which will entertain the audience.
4.Other reporters or presenters are used in the TV news programme to present different news stories because the audience could get bored of watching one presenter throughout the whole news programme presenting each story to the viewers.
5.There is a balanced male and female presenters as they have one female and one male that is always seen on the show which makes it easy and shows to the audience that they are a diverse company and programme.

Opening Sequence

1) The first shot is the graphics of the name of the news show.
2) The opening sequence includes graphics as it has graphics in the first few shots of the BBC news title and a moving screen which continuously shows moving animations.
3) Music is used in the opening sequence as it is used as the theme song of the BBC news title.
4) The audience are told the several stories that will be shown throughout the programme and all of the titles of the stories are introduced to them so that they know what they are going to be watching in that episode.

Studio mise-en-scène-

1) The audience can see the cameras that are set in place to record the programme as well as the desks, the lights, the screen behind that the news is presented on as well as the studio.
2) The presenters are behind desks and I think this is because they have scripts or newspapers behind them to read everything that they need to say. Also, it looks more professional therefore it appeals to the audience,
3) Journalists and technology such as the cameras are visible to the audience and this shows them how everything done so that it feels more realistic to the viewers.

4) The studio is red as a background and has 4 main colours; black, white, red and grey.

How news stories are presented-

1. The news programme typically presents a story by:

The presenter talking to the camera about the news headline and they have animations giving more information with the presenter talking over the animation. Also Interviews with a significant person or members of the public.

2. -Presenter talking to the camera and reporter at a different location.
-Interviews with significant people or members of the public

-Animations on the animated screen

3.- Political
-International
-Local (UK)
-Sport
-Celebrity

4.-The election
-The migrants

Running order-

1) The top story is the elections.
2) The top story lasts 7 minutes.
3) It will cover the earthquake in Nepal.
4) Each story is shown for 4 minutes.
5) It was shown for the time that it was because they weren't as important as the main story.

Audience

1) The target audience is mainly families.
2) 4 million viewers.
3) Someone might choose to watch this TV news programme over others because it is more traditional news and has been running for years therefore it is trustworthy and reliable.
4) There is an opportunity for the audience to get involved with the TV news programme as it has a website that people can visit and they also provide you with an email to send in your views.

2) Ofcom has a set of rules which is called the Broadcasting code and they make sure that the TV news is fair and accurate by letting viewers call and complain about what they have seen so that OFCOM can review it.
3) I agree with the accusation that the news is dumbed down because in one of the shows they put a down arrow on an animated receipt when it clearly said decrease beside it.

TV News and New/Digital Media

1) The TV News programme has a dedicated website called BBC News.
2) The website offers viewers a chance to get involved with the news and send in videos.

4) The Twitter feed promotes the programme by tweeting what is going to be shown next on the news and when the next programme airs.

Case Study 3

1) What is the angle of a news story? Give an example to explain your answer.
The news angle is the perspective that the news provider takes on a certain event. Changing the angle can significantly alter the way a news story is reported.

2) What is the difference between tabloid and broadsheet news coverage?
Tabloid news is less serious and informal content, focusing on celebrities, sports and crime stories. Broadsheet is serious news, politics, economics and international news.

3) What would be an example of a tabloid-style TV news programme?
Sky news is an example as it shows less serious and informal.

International: World News
National: UK-Wide news
Regional: London/ Yorkshire/ Scotland
Local: West London/ Leeds/ Edinburgh

BBC News election story
1) Is this international, national, regional or local news? How can you tell?
This is a national news. I know this is a national news because it is politics and has views about what David Cameron and Ed Miliband were going to do.

2) What angle does the report take on the story?
In this news stories they have a strong angle towards what they will do for the UK. Besides this they give equal sides to the election as they show some of what David Cameron has to say and also what Ed Miliband has to say which is very important.
3) Is this more tabloid or broadsheet-style coverage?
This news story is more broadsheet because it is formal and has basic news to what a class of AB would understand. It is also a very formal story.

This is a more tabloid coverage of the story.

4) What kind of audience would you expect to watch this type of TV news programme? Why?
I would expect an older audience in the age range of 16 to 40+ to watch this news programme because it is a traditional news story based on voting and elections which appeals to an older audience and what they want their country to be like.

STV coverage of the election story

1) Is this international, national, regional or local news? How can you tell?
This is an international story as it is abased on what Scotland are going to do and also what the mp's of London are going to do too regarding the election.

2) What angle does the report take on the story?
The report takes on the story from a regional angle

3) Is this more tabloid or broadsheet-style coverage?
This is more tabloid style coverage because it is informal whilst presenting the story and the news mainly consists of interviews with the Scottish party.

4) What kind of audience would you expect to watch this type of TV news programme? Why

2) The programme was first broadcast on 2 November 1982.

4) It is produced by ITN.

Presenters

1) The presenters are Jon Snow, Matt Frei, Krishnan Guru-Murthy and Cathy Newman.
2) Jon Snow wears different types of colourful ties for every episode that they broadcast. It communicates to the audience that the show is aimed at young people as the ties and what they wear is very bright and colourful which appeals to teenagers.
3) They use a variety of TV news presenters in TV news programmes because they don't want their audience getting bored of the same presenter.
4)  Other reporters or presenters are used in TV news in video news packages where they will be at a different location and the presenters from the studio will be asking the journalist questions about what is going on. They could also be like "I will now hand over to" and give the name of the presenter who will present a different type of news.
5) There is a balance between male and female presenters on Channel 4 news. There is also a mix of race and ethnicity as one of the presenters is a male Indian, and the rest are British. These aspects may effect the audience as it would intrigue many races into watching the news depending on who the presenter is.

Opening Sequence

1) The first shot is of the Channel 4 news logo introducing the programme to the viewers.
2) The opening sequence uses graphics to grab the attention of the audience by making their graphics bright and colourful and making sure that the screen is always moving.
3) Music is used in the opening sequence as the theme song of the news programme.
4) The audience are told several news stories of what will be coming up next in the first 2 opening minutes of the programme.

Studio mise-en-scène

1) The audience can see the desks and the background screens which display the news and you are also able to see the background of the studio with the presenter in front of it.
2) The presenters are always standing and I think this is because people behind desks are always reading off scripts and have some sort of newspaper in front of them to give them information on their news stories. They also need to be able to move freely around to intrigue their audience so that they do not get bored.
3) Journalists are visible on a split screen where one screen shows the presenter in the studio and another shows the journalist live at the location where they are reporting. This suggests to the audience that they are getting live news and are presenting everything that is happening at the location and the information does not seem fake.
4) The studio is brightly coloured in several different ways. The presenter wears a colourful tie in every different broadcast and the studio is purple.#

How news stories are presented

1) The news programme presents a story by explaining what is going on and having live interviews with video footage of what is going on.
2) Channel 4 news has the presenter to the camera and the reporter at the location to present the news.
3) The TV news programme typically covers politics, international news and sport news as well as non-serious news but it is presented in a way to intrigue the audience and make them laugh.
4) Jon Snow gives the title of the news story and shows them the video footage of what they are presenting. It intrigues their audience because the person they interview says "and I'm shutting your butt down". This is supposed to be humorous and fascinates the audience as they are supposed to be young viewers. The reporters are also at the locations of what is happening and they present the news from their location.

Audience

1) The target audience is mainly 16-24 year olds in the UK.
2) The average amount of viewers is 2.5 million people.
3) Someone might choose to watch this TV news programme over others as it has humour in it and presents their stories in a way that intrigues their audience and does not bore them.
4) There is an option for the audience to get involved with the news programme as they can send their views in on Facebook or twitter.
5) It doesn't offer anything.

Institution

1) It is owned by Channel 4 News Corporation.
2) Ofcom has to make sure that the TV news is fair and accurate by letting people send in their views and opinions on what they have watched. They have set a Broadcasting Code which is a set of rules that TV news programmes have to abide by.

TV News and New/Digital Media

1) Channel 4 has a dedicated website for their news that updates their broadcasts regularly.
2) The website shows the viewers news.
3) Channel 4 news has a twitter feed which you can also contact Jon Snow on.

Taken

The trailer of Taken uses many narrative techniques. In the beginning of the movie it shows Liam Neeson's daughter travelling to Paris with her best friend which is the equilibrium.  The Propp's character theory, we have a clear protagonist or hero which is Liam Neeson. In many ways he is shown to be the most stronger character and it is his job to try get his daughter back. Propp's talks about the human traffickers which are the people who kidnapped his daughter. In the movie it shows that they're evil and want women for prostitution

Genre- Horror

Narrative- The storyline is clearly based on a family that move to a new house which is haunted and scary things which come to life. This is a tense narrative which fits the genre horror very well.

Characters-  The characters are typical american but they all come from different cities in America. The main hero is brave, strong and willing to do anything to save his family. The family is scared and the mother gets possessed.

Iconography- There is plenty of iconography typical of the horror genre. Also there was blood. tension and sound effects which make the movie scarier.

Settings- The movie is set in a haunted house.

Characters- The characters are young american women and men, probably 18-22. The women that died; young, female and vulnerable. Also her best friend who wants to get in contact with her; brave, young, female and willing to do anything to get her friend.

Iconography- In this trailer there are plenty of iconography regarding to a horror movie such as loud sound effects, death, blood and tension.

Genre- Romance

Film promotion: pitching

Title: Karma

A young teenager, who gets murdered by her own best friend for falling in love with the same young boy her best friend, is overly obsessed with.

This film is a horror which is set in London and is similar to the other women from the director Nick Cassavetes. This film will appeal to those to the age of 15+.

The story is based around a strong bonded friend who falls out because they both fall in love with a guy.

The narrative of my film: A sixteen year old teenager named Alex Harris has a best friend named Chloe Lewis. They have known each other since they were very young and had never got into an argument with each other, until John Cameron comes on the scene. Betraying the trust of her best friend, Chloe Lewis dates John knowing that her best friend is in love with him too. Her best friend finds out and decides to kill Chloe so that she could get John Cameron.  Months later Chloe starts haunting her best friend Alex Harris and strange stuff starts happening.

Minority Report shot-by-shot analysis

Shot 1
The medium close up angle allows to see the police's face clearly and up to the shoulders. The medium close up also allows to see facial expressions and a bit of the background. There's more than one police officer which may show that the situation they're in is very dangerous. There's less background which shows that it's focused on the police officer's. The facial expression shows that police officers aren't very happy and the audience know that they want to catch Tom.

shot 2
The wide / establishing shot angle allows to see the location of where this next scene is taking place. The establishing shot allows enough background as it's taking place in an alley way where it's very dark and also where it's about to build tension. The car immediately tells the audience that it's going to be taking place in this particular location.
Shot 3
The close up shot angle shows the character's facial expression and by looking at closely you can see that the character is in a alleyway. The close up shot was used so that the audience could see expression on Tom's face. His facial expression shows that he's annoyed.

Key Concepts - media analysis

Media language- The first key convention is the talk talk broadband logo at the bottom of the image in big capital letters. The logo is lit up which matches up with the slogan- 'A brighter home for everyone'. The word 'brighter' links with the logo because the logo is bright and catches peoples attention quickly. The image suggests that the people who use talk talk broadband are well educated. I know this because in the house there are loads of books on the shelf and also she is using a laptop which suggests she can read. The slogan explains that if you're using talk talk broadband then you'll have a brighter future. The colours are very light, it shows that the people who use talk talk are very calm and have no problems.

institution- The major institution behind this advert is BT sport. This is because they're both broadband and similar because they both provide internet for people. Talk talk broadband is better than BT sport because the internet doesn't cut off at all.

Audience- I think this advert is aimed at older customers of talk talk broadband since they know how to pay and if the broadband is good. They will know how much it costs in a month/ year. I think the age range is 20-60 because older people are more aware of the payment. I think the gender percentage is 50% male and 50% female because in my opinion I think both genders know about the broadband and how to deal with it.

Representation- This advert presents that talk talk broadband is the best and helps everyone live in peace and success. This advert also shows a women holding a laptop alone in a house. The house looks bright and comfortable. This suggests that by using talktalk broadband it makes you have a brighter home.

Media debates

'My facebook friends are the same as my real friends.'

I disagree with this statement because facebook is all about making new friends and communicating with people. Also facebook helps you make new friends by going on the search button. Facebook helps search, likes and look at peoples profile/ pictures. Most of the people use facebook and meet new people by going on the chat button and adding people they don't know. Facebook also shows the location of the person and where about they go, this helps other people to know where their friends go.

BBC TV

1.  The key information about the programme:

- This programme is broadcast on BBC news channel.
- It is broadcast Monday to Sunday; BBC breakfast 6 am, lunchtime news at 1 pm and BBC news 6 pm, BBC london news and weather at 6:30.
- The presenters are: at one oclock its Anna ford and Darren Jordon.
At 6:00 its George Aagrah and Sophie Raworth.
At 10:00 its Huw Edwards and Fiona Bruce.
At breakfast its Dermot Murnaghan, Natasha, Bill Tumbul.
- The total distribution: 388 million households
Full time distribution: 249 million households
North America: 115.6 million
Latin America: 13.3 million
Africa: 9.2 million
Europe: 116.2 million
South Africa: 44 million
Middle East and NA: 24.9 million
- The programme has won many rewards.
2. The institution behind the programme-
- The channel was launched at October 18th 1922.
The founder of this programme is John Reith, however the person in charge is Director- General Mark Thompson.
- The channel tells people what is happening around the world about the latest news which effects peoples daily lives or could have in the future.

Target audience- I think this is aimed at adults because it comes late on TV so children would not be awake and also it has some inappropriate stories. In my opinion I think it's a 50/50 split between females and males.

The main stories that were broadcast on that day were:

-  Footage shows rebel with MH17 wreckage
- A man dies in Australia shark attack
- Children killed during UKraine 'truce'
- 'We had no warning' floods survivor
- Fire breaks out on wooden rollercoaster

I think the stories were broadcast in this order because the first three stories are very serious so they put it first to grab attention. Also it makes people more aware of the situations around the world and especially story 2 because it makes us stay safe when going to the beach were theres sharks in the sea. The 3rd story suggests that everyone should always be prepared incase anything dangerous happens- 'we had no warning'. This tells us that they didn't know that there was going to be a flood going on.

The main stories that were broadcast today were:

- UK sending arms to Iraqi government
- Lost arctic ship found after 160 years
- Police chef 'failed' abuse victims
- Women tells court of travis 'assault'
- 88 metal hips and still doing the splits

I think the stories were broadcast in this particular order because they're about the world and that's really important for adults to know about . Also I think the UK sending arms to Iraqi government is important because its political and shows England point of view towards this situation. They put ' 88 metal hips and still doing the splits' last because its not important and its a fun topic to talk about.
